Expert Says Dating Apps Threaten Craft Beer Industry More Than Legal Cannabis

Previously, the craft beer industry has expressed concern that legal weed would grow to be a big competitor. But as more and more places continue to loosen their cannabis laws, experts are starting to see other industries are impacted by legalization. And it turns out, weed isn’t a threat to beer. In actuality, leaders in the craft beer industry are saying that smart phones and dating apps are a threat to craft beer than marijuana.

According to reports coming from the Brewers Association and Beverage Daily, new attitudes and perspectives are emerging in the craft beer scene. More specifically, fewer experts in the craft beer industry are visiting cannabis as a threat to their business.

In past years, many thought that legal weed might cut into beer sales. The assumption was that consumers might decide to buy weed instead of beer for leisure and recreational consumption.

But so far, that fear has proven unfounded. In actuality, the Brewers Association recently said that data from places that were weed-legal has not shown any reduction in craft beer sales.

“Although there’s lots of chatter about this occurring… to date, there’s little evidence that cannabis has impacted beer sales,” the company wrote recently.

But it looks as though products instead of weed could start biting into craft beer’s bottom line. Currently, a number of experts in the beer area are coming to see phones–and dating programs –as the threat to beer.

“We look at cannabis can choose to enjoy with their income like wine ” Bob Pease, CEO and President of the Brewers Association, told Beverage Daily.

Is a threat right now, probably, to beer than cannabis. You used to go out to meet people, go out to a pub… now you just swipe directly on your telephone, you don’t have to go anywhere. This is a part of the society that is evolving. ”

Beer Companies Getting Into the Legal Weed Game

Interestingly, the craft beer industry’s shifting attitudes go beyond simply no longer fearing weed. Now, it’s becoming increasingly common to see weed as an opportunity rather than a competitor.

So far, this includes the possibility of partnering with cannabis companies to create beverage lines. Furthermore, substantial investments have been made by beer companies to the legal cannabis space.

Here are some of the beer companies to make moves to the marijuana industry so far:

  • Molson Coors recently announced plans to create a line of non-alcoholic, cannabis-infused beverages. Within this endeavor, Molson Coors’ Canada branch will allegedly partner with Canadian weed company The Hydropothecary Corp.. Recently released a line of non-alcoholic, cannabinoid-infused craft beers in Nevada.
  • Constellation Brands, the owner of Corona and Modelo, allegedly bought a 9.9 percent stake in massive cannabis firm Canopy Growth Corp..
  • In 2017, craft beer brewer Lagunitas started a marijuana beer called SuperCritical.
