Recent Study Reveals Anti-Anxiety Effects of Ketamine May Alter Theta Brainwaves

Every year, 18.1% of the American people is affected by an anxiety disorder. And needless to say, it isn’t a key cannabis can be a treatment alternative for many of them. However, some recent discoveries have ascertained ketamine may be another effective solution. In actuality, ketamine appears to function in treating a number of different ailments, such as post-traumatic anxiety disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, and phobias. Looking into patients with certain anxiety disorders, a group of scientists discovered that theta brainwaves could be altered by ketamine. Also it effected patients that had dealt with treatment-resistant disorders. Could this ability create it the next best therapeutic to treat these ailments?

Simply studying anxiety and/or social anxiety disorders, scientists observed twelve patients for this study. They gave three each week, ascending dose levels. After monitoring their brain activity using an EEG. In the right front part of the brain, scientists noted a drop in medium-low frequency (“theta”-RRB- power. Theta brainwaves are responsible for the relaxed state of mind that someone may feel after spending a long time driving on the freeway or running long-distance. This restful state can cause coming up with thinking that is creative or ideas.

These patients receiving ketamine took a panic questionnaire to determine their levels of stress. And they saw changes in these amounts. To be exact, at the conclusion, 8 of the 12 patients reported changes in their own anxiety.

From this study, scientists could conclude ketamine may be an alternative for those treatments that are resistant to. And they could realize that changes in these theta waves could prove crucial for understanding all treatments that are anti-anxiety.

No Ketamine Prescriptions Anytime Soon

However, don’t expect to pick ketamine up from the pharmacy. This study serves as only one of the first to look into the effects of ketamine. Its small number of patients studied make it one of the preliminary research of its kind. To be able to make sure its effectiveness in treating other “neurotic” ailments like PTSD, OCD, or phobias, ketamine has to be analyzed in a similar study on patients with these disorders.

Some things remain unclear though the results of this study look promising. Above all, though there was a change in those theta waves, it’s unknown ketamine generates those changes. Additionally, these anxiety disorders can change following treatment for a while, up to 7 days. It requires more study on the long-term consequences on the individual.

This drug isn’t an easy one to give to patients. Pair that with a few of those bad press ketamine has already suffered in the past couple of decades, and it probably won’t create the market anytime soon. More studies must be performed before it could be of any help to treatment-resistant stress disorders Even though it appears to have great potential. In treating various kinds of disorders only after testing will we know its scope.

Ketamine: The Next Medical Breakthrough?

Ketamine’s power becomes evident not only in this study, but in others from a number of the scientists.  At a similar study taking a look at patients with anxiety disorders given ketamine, some patients reported success and a few didn’t. Some claimed side effects were caused by the ketamine. As an example, one said the medication caused the individual to feel out of control. Others claimed it was an intense feeling. And like most medications, the drug produced nausea in some people. Still others only felt in their stress for a decrease , without side effects.

In spite of these side effects, the therapeutic possibility in ketamine makes it a treatment possibility for those with anxiety disorders. Compared against what Big Pharma can now offer these same patients, ketamine has few competitors. Strong-willed scientists working in small centers may well discover the research necessary to put ketamine on the market as another best solution in treating anxiety disorders.
