Study Reveals Anti-Anxiety Effects of Ketamine May Alter Theta Brainwaves

Recent Study Reveals Anti-Anxiety Effects of Ketamine May Alter Theta Brainwaves

Every year, 18.1% of the American people is affected by an anxiety disorder. And of course, it isn’t a key cannabis can be a treatment alternative for many . However, some recent discoveries have determined ketamine may be another effective alternative. In actuality, ketamine seems to work in treating a number of different ailments, such as post-traumatic anxiety disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, and phobias. Looking into patients with anxiety disorders, a group of scientists discovered that theta brainwaves could alter. Additionally patients who had coped with treatment-resistant disorders were effected by it. Could this ability make it the next best therapeutic to treat these ailments?

Only studying anxiety and/or social anxiety disorders, scientists observed twelve patients . They gave three every week, ascending dose levels. After monitoring their brain activity using an EEG. In the right front portion of the brain, scientists noted a decrease in medium-low frequency (“theta”-RRB- power. Theta brainwaves are responsible for the relaxed state of mind that someone may feel after spending a long time driving on the freeway or running long-distance. This restful state can lead to coming up with ideas or thinking.

These patients receiving ketamine took a panic questionnaire to determine their levels of stress. And they saw changes in these levels. To be precise, at the conclusion, 8 of the 12 patients reported changes in their anxiety.

From this study, scientists could conclude ketamine might be an alternative for those resistant to other anti-anxiety remedies. And they could understand that changes in these theta waves could prove crucial for understanding all anti-anxiety treatments.

No Ketamine Prescriptions Anytime Soon

Don ’t expect to pick up ketamine in the drugstore. This study serves to look into the effects of ketamine. And though ketamine was used in the treatment of depression and PTSD, this study only looked into generalized anxiety and social anxiety disorders. Its small number of patients studied make it one of the research of its kind. To be able to ensure its effectiveness in treating other “neurotic” ailments like PTSD, OCD, or phobias, ketamine must be tested in a similar study on patients with these disorders.

Some things remain unclear though these results of the study appear promising. Most importantly, though there was a change in those theta waves, it’s unknown how ketamine generates those changes. In addition, these anxiety disorders can alter for a while, up to 7 days. Nonetheless, it requires more study.

Finally, this drug is not an easy one to give to patients. Pair that with a few of those bad press ketamine has already suffered in the last couple of years, and it likely won’t make the market anytime soon. More research must be carried out before it can be of any help, Even though it seems to have potential. Just we understand its scope.

Ketamine: The Next Medical Breakthrough?

Ketamine’s power becomes clear in this study, but in others from a number of the scientists.  At a similar study looking at patients with anxiety disorders given ketamine, some patients reported success and a few didn’t. Some claimed side effects were caused by the ketamine. As an example, one said the medication caused the patient to feel out of control. Others claimed it was an intense feeling. And like most drugs, the drug produced transient nausea. Still others felt their stress for a short-term reduction , without side effects.

Even with these side effects, the therapeutic possibility in ketamine makes it a brand new treatment possibility for anyone with anxiety disorders. Compared against what Big Pharma can now provide these same patients, ketamine has few competitors. Strong-willed scientists working in small centers may well discover the research required to place ketamine on the market as the next best solution in treating anxiety disorders.
